These five essential components are vital aspects of nursing care, as a lack of them can result in many diseases and problems. Also the lack of sunlight can lead to vitamin D deficiencies. Poor lighting contributes to traffic accidents where kerosene lamps used in low-income countries cause fires and burns. In regards to cleanliness, hand hygiene is still a leading concern and is primarily responsible for hospital-acquired infections. About 2.5 billion people still lack access to improved sanitation and many people defecate in the open as a result of this. Along with a lack of access to safe drinking water, inefficient sewer systems also contribute to disease. Nightingale noted many waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery and typhoid during her time, and these diseases are still responsible for many deaths today. Although there is an improved access to safe drinking water today, many people still lack access to this. As the low to middle income countries become more industrialized, these diseases are predicted to increase.
Poor air quality and air pollution have a significant attribution to respiratory diseases, which remain a major killer today (Lee, Clark, & Thompson, 2013). The five essential components to optimal healing remain a vital part of global health and these include pure air, pure water, efficient drainage, cleanliness, and light (Lee, Clark, & Thompson, 2013). Nightingale suggested that one of the reasons for the high infection rate during the Crimean war was due to poor ventilation.

Two levels of nursing, technical and professional are required to meet the demands of health care today as seen in the two year and four year nursing programs present in many countries (Barritt, 1973). The nursing profession is becoming a more highly paid profession that is commensurate with the years of expensive nursing education and preparation (Barritt, 1973). Some of Nightingales beliefs that are in play today are: The values and principles that Nightingale’s theory encompasses are so wholesome that it is continued to be used today in the education of modern nursing today (Barritt, 1973). The Nightingale Training School for Nurses established in 1860 London was of great influence to the education of nurses of the modern world. Nightingale was concerned with teaching nurses how and what to observe in patients (Dennis & Prescott, 1985). Manipulation of the environment to the advantage of the patient to restoring health (Dennis & Prescott, 1985). This school of thought was proved to be false by Pasteur and his work in the study of bacteriology. Nightingale’s belief that disease is caused by miasmas, meaning they spontaneously occur due to dirty and ill-ventilation, is not accurate.
This acts as a deterrent for nurses who are caring for these patients because it can cause psychological drainage which can affect other patients who are receiving care (Dennis & Prescott, 1985).
